Waste

• Fulfil their ''Duty of Care'' obligation.
• Continue to work towards minimising waste and maximise waste reduction, re-use and the recycling of materials.
• Implement actions to reduce waste and increase recycling within Council operations.
• Give commitment to the Waste Strategy.

Energy

Implement actions to achieve reductions in greenhouse gas emissions within Council operations.
Support and facilitate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (such as Carbon Dioxide (CO2)) within Barnsley borough, by encouraging energy efficiency, renewable energy generation, walking, cycling and better public transport.

Water

• Ensure efficient use and reduce losses.
• Ensure operations and actions cannot pollute water sources.

Transport

• Minimise the environmental impact of the Council's fleet vehicles and car mileage, to, from and at work by Council staff.
• Encourage cycling, walking and the provision of efficient, safe and accessible public transport.

Biodiversity and Land Use

• Protect and enhance the natural environment.
• Manage land under Council control for habitat, wildlife benefit and all aspects of sustainable development.
• Work in partnership with landowners, both public and private, to promote the management of land in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

Purchasing and Procurement

• Minimise the environmental impact of all Council purchases of goods and services through the Environmental Procurement and Commissioning Policy.
• Work in partnership with our suppliers and contractors to minimise the environmental impact of their goods and services.

Sustainability and Liveability

• Influence and encourage other agencies to work towards the principles of sustainable development.
• Empower Communities to undertake environmental projects within their locations.
• Continue to work with the Barnsley Local Business Partnership to engage on a regular basis with local businesses and address their needs.
• Manage noise, nuisance and air quality issues.
• Raise environmental awareness across the Borough.
