Sustainability is about improving the quality of life for our communities now, whilst simultaneously considering wider implications, such as resource-use, energy-efficiency or long-term issues. Sustainable development is the process by which we aim to move towards a more sustainable society.
The UK's Sustainable Development Strategy, published in May 1999, defines sustainable development in terms of four objectives:
As a forward-thinking modern Local Authority, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council recognise that the concepts of sustainability must be integral to all that we do from projects and programmes in the community, and through all our strategies and policies. The Sustainability Group is tasked with raising awareness of these issues within the authority, combined with implementing programmes to deliver specific changes. Access our various work programme areas in the side menu bar to discover more details, and how you can contribute.
