The year on year increase in waste arising is one of the biggest waste management problems that Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council has to deal with.
Despite Barnsley residents recycling more and more every year, in 2005/6 we still buried 100,000 tonnes in Landfill sites.
To protect the environment and enable Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council meet stringent Central Government waste management targets, the Council has written a plan for Barnsley’s waste called the "Municipal Waste Management Strategy".
The Sustainability Group led on the development of the Municipal Waste Management Strategy, which sets out the Council's aims to :
• reduce the amount of waste Barnsley produces
• improve the Borough’s recycling/composting performance to ensure that around half our waste is effectively recycled or composted
• recover energy from the rest of our waste and bury as little as possible in landfill sites
