From 7 April 2008 there are changes to the Housing Benefit scheme. The new scheme is called Local Housing Allowance. If you rent from a private landlord and make a new claim, change address or have a break in entitlement, on or after 7 April 2008, you will come under the new scheme. To find out more please go to Local Housing Allowance.
The Council's Benefit section administers Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit, which are Government schemes that help people on low-income pay their Council Tax and rent on the home that they live in. To work out your Housing Benefit / Council Tax benefit we will look at the money that you have coming in, the capital or savings that you have, and your circumstances, such as size of your family, age, any disabled members of your household and other people living with you. For Housing Benefit claims we also take into consideration the size, and in some cases, the condition of the property you live in, and the amount of rent you pay compared with similar homes in the area.
As a Barnsley resident we would like to encourage you to check your entitlement to council tax/housing benefit.
We will work out if you qualify for benefit taking into account your individual circumstances. This will include age, income, capital and whether you live alone.
