Council Tax Discount - Patients in Hospitals and Homes

Description

The Council Tax legislation provides that any person whose sole or main residence is a Hospital or Home will not be counted in the total number of adult residents for the purpose of Council Tax.


The term sole or main residence signifies that the person concerned is living in a Hospital or a Home on a long-term basis therefore there is no intention to return home in the foreseeable future

A home can be a residential care home, a nursing home, a mental nursing home, a bail hostel or a probation hostel

The person must be receiving care, treatment or both in the home or hostel.If a person who fulfils the above criteria has left the property empty, this property may be exempt from Council Tax. For more information click on 'Exemptions'.

Eligibility

Those entitled to discounts include:-

Hospital Patients

A person will only qualify for this discount disregard if he/she is a patient and has his/her sole or main residence in a hospital.

If a person is in hospital for a short time, Council Tax wil continue to be charged at the home address.

Patients in Homes

People with a sole or main residence in non-self contained accommodation which provides them with personal care for old age, disablement, or past or present alcohol or drug dependence or mental disorders.

How to claim a discount

Please complete the Council Tax Discounts - Patients in Hospitals or Homes application form and return it the Benefits & Taxation Division.

How you can help

You can help by providing accurate information, having your Council Tax reference to hand when making enquiries and completing and signing the appropriate form.

Changes in circumstances
Applicants must inform the Council as soon as possible if there are any changes to the information provided. This may affect the Council Tax charge and applicants will have to repay any discount that they are not entitled to.
