Barnsley and the surrounding area have had many newspapers over the last 250 years. The most well known and long running is the Barnsley Chronicle. The department holds microfilm copies of almost every issue of the Chronicle (with certain exceptions, notably during World War I and World War II) from 1858 to the present day.
However the department does have a large repository of other newspapers which are listed below, with accompanying coverage dates. Those marked with an asterisk are available by request in hard-copy only.
