The "Friends of Barnsley Archives and Local Studies" is a voluntary group whose aims are to promote and encourage an awareness of the wealth of local historical research material available in the Archives and Local Studies department of Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, based in the Central Library.
The group is committed to raising funds to develop and improve the facilities available in the Archives and Local Studies department. These funds are used to purchase archive material, books and equipment for that department which can then be used by the general public for research purposes.
As well as fund raising the group assists the Archives and Local Studies staff by listing and indexing archive material, helping with publishing projects and generally publicising the work of the department.
The group publishes a quarterly journal, which is free to members, and contains articles of interest to both local and family historians. Talks by local historians are held every two months in the Lecture Room of Barnsley Central Library.
If you have an interest in local studies or family history and would like to become a member of the "Friends of Barnsley Archives and Local Studies" please contact: -
