Here, following the Best Value Review of Libraries which took place in January 2001, is the vision for the way forward for Barnsley Libraries:-
"Our community believes that Lifelong Learning is essential for the successful social & economic regeneration of Barnsley. Barnsleys Library Service has a big part to play in this.
We have a radical vision to transform our existing service. We see the Library Service as part of a network of neighbourhood based centres where people can access information advice & guidance using the latest technology & borrow & use up to date books & materials for learning & recreation, with support from enthusiastic & well trained staff.
Our aim is to provide a high quality service where we actively engage the local community, catering for the needs of families, business people, & others. We realise the needs of neighbourhoods & individuals are different across Barnsley, so how & where we deliver the library services needs to reflect this. For example our library services could be delivered through a community centre, a traditional branch library, a school, a mobile, or even a health centre. In each case you would be guaranteed access to the same high standard & quality of service.
This must be an inclusive service where everyone feels that they are welcome & encouraged to use the facilities & resources.
In order to realise this new vision for the Library Service, the following objectives will be pursued by :-
Reorganising the existing service in order to meet the needs of individual communities in the most appropriate way & using all the facilities to their maximum potential, including non-library purposes.
Partnership working with interested parties to develop strong alliances, helping to eliminate duplication & encourage joint planning & joint provision.
Focusing on people by involving local people & staff in designing, developing & delivering the service.
Stimulating interest in the cultural heritage of the Borough by the provision of a high quality Archives & Local Studies service.
In developing this vision we will continue to offer recreational reading through the centres, mobile libraries & special services."
