A wide range of items may be borrowed from the library service.  Here are a few things that you need to know:-

Books

The loan period for most of our books is 3 weeks (including Junior Books). Reference books, however, may only be consulted in the Library. These books have yellow stickers on the spine.

Non-Book Materials

Music cassettes, CDs and Talking Books may be loaned for 3 weeks (Maximum of 10 at one time).

Videos

Premium videos are loaned for 3 days. Non-fiction videos for 1 week. Children's videos 1 week. Double videos 1 week. All other videos 1 week.

DVD

Premium DVD's have a 3 day loan. All other DVD's have a 1 week loan

Open Learning Materials

The initial loan period is 3 weeks. If following this you would like to keep the item it can be renewed for a further 12 weeks. This first renewal may be carried out in person or by phone, but for any subsequent renewals the items must be brought in to the issuing library to be checked and then renewed. Material may be renewed in this way until your course is completed.

Renewal Of Library Materials

Books (Including Junior Items)

Library books (including tapes for the blind and all junior items) may be renewed in several ways

  • By visiting the library and bringing in the books or your library ticket
  • Online by accessing the library catalogue and using a borrower barcode and Personal Identification number (PIN), which is allocated by library staff.
  • By telephone
  • By post.  Please include your name, library ticket number and details of the books to be renewed
  • By e-mail BarnsleyLibraryEnquiries@barnsley.gov.uk - please include your name, library ticket number and details of the books to be renewed

If however the item is requested by another borrower, you will be unable to renew it and asked to return the item to the issuing library on or before its due date. It may therefore be advisable to apply for renewal a few days before the item is due.

All the above material may be renewed 4 times without being brought into the library, but following the fourth renewal, must be returned. If it is not requested by another borrower the material may then be reissued.

Multi Media Items

Renewals are also possible for these items in the same ways as above. However in the case of telephone renewals an additional charge will be added to your ticket to cover the extra loan period.

Open Learning Materials

Following the initial 3 week loan period these items may be renewed for a further 12 weeks. The first renewal may be carried out in person or by telephone, but for any subsequent renewals the items must be returned to the issuing library to be checked and then renewed.

Inter Library Loans

Renewal of materials obtained via Inter Library Loans is dependent on the lending library and the demand for the item. Please contact the Requests department (01226 773915) for details on renewing these items.
