THE MAYOR of Barnsley, Cllr Margaret Morgan and the deputy Mayor, Cllr Joe Hayward have been presented with ceremonial engraved spades to mark the £54 million investment in Barnsley's new primary schools.
Earlier this year, in his role as Mayor, Cllr Joe Hayward performed turf-cuttinmg ceremonies at Penistone Springvale, Hoyland Common, Dearne Lacewood, Darton, Grove Street, Longcar, Cudworth, Pontefract Road and Sandhill primary schools.
As the newly appointed Mayor, Cllr Margaret Morgan will be invited to officially open the new schools, something she is particularly looking forward to, as a former teacher and head teacher.
Presenting the spades, which are engraved with the names of the schools, were Adrian Mole Regional Director and Mick Docherty Contracts Manager of Carillion and James Aberdein, General Manager of Modern Schools, Barnsley.
Carillion has been responsible for building the new schools and will maintain them for the next 25 years.
Some 3,600 children and staff will benefit from these enhanced learning environments.
