There are local authority byelaws that govern the employment of young people; these also apply to young people involved in theatre performances, filming or modelling assignments. All school pupils involved in entertainment must be licensed before they can work. It is illegal to employ children under the age of 13.
The Education Welfare Service investigates and monitors employment undertaken by young people of compulsory school age to ensure that it is legal and safe, that it does not damage or interrupt their education, and that it is in accordance with BMBC local byelaws. As part of this, it is responsible for issuing work permits to children undertaking part-time employment.
You can download an Application Form for Work Permits , but you cannot apply online as signatures are required from parents and employers. Parents must also complete a Child Employment Certification of Health before their child can take up part-time employment.
