We recognise the critical importance of leadership in delivering the very best outcomes for our children, young people and their families.  We know that the quality of leadership will make a significant difference to achieving our vision.  That is why we place the importance of leadership development at the heart of our work.

Our interest in developing leadership is to help achieve the goal that all children and young people develop their capabilities as successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens and effective contributors to society.  We aim to promote and develop effective and inspired leadership at all levels with an emphasis on distributed leadership and a commitment to collaboration.

Leadership_boxWe work in collaboration with our partners, including The National College for School Leadership, The Training Development Agency and the Children’s Workforce Development Council to ensure our leaders have the skills, knowledge and confidence to make a positive difference to the lives of children and young people in Barnsley.  We offer a range of programmes, conferences, networks, placements, mentoring and coaching support, and research networks to support leadership development at all levels.

We have a leadership succession strategy developed by school leaders for school leaders to ensure that our present and future leaders have the skills, capacity and ambition to transform the education system in Barnsley into the best in the country.  We promote leading change and the creation of new environments and a re-modeled workforce with the capacity to bring about success.  We have a high quality Continuous Professional Development Strategy to support workforce development and leadership at all levels, including the introduction of new governance arrangements.

In 2008 we will launch The Leadership Centre for Public Life in partnership with Huddersfield University, which will champion change for children and young people and develop leadership within a multi-agency context.  This centre will help to ensure our leaders across the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families are resilient, well informed and creative with the requisite skills, knowledge and experience to ensure the effective delivery of integrated services at local level.
