Schools-title

In Barnsley there are currently 53 nursery units , for children between three and four years of age, attached to local authority schools.

Education for children between the ages of five and 11 is provided through:

2 infant schools (5-7 years)
2 junior schools (7-11 years) and
78 primary schools (5-11 years)

Sixty-three are community schools, 14 are voluntary aided and 5 are voluntary controlled.

Barnsley is involved in the Private Finance Initiative (PFI), a £54 million investment scheme, which will replace 13 of our schools with new primary learning centres, each with state of the art facilities.  Some 3,600 pupils and staff will benefit from these enhanced learning environments.

There are currently 14 secondary community schools (11-16), one of which has a sixth form (11-18), one Learning Academy, which opened in September 2006, a special school for children aged 3-19 years with significant and complex special educational needs, and a pupil referral unit .

By 2012, as part of 'Remaking Learning' and 'Building Schools for the Future', our secondary schools will have been replaced by nine Advanced Learning Centres - new purpose built schools with extended opening hours and state of the art facilities, accessible to all members of the community.
