Summary

Alleygating is a crime prevention measure, which involves erecting locking gates to the ends of alley-ways and passages in residential areas.

Alleygating schemes can result in a number of advantages to the area covered by a scheme, which include:-

  • Extra Security to prevent domestic burglary opportunities
  • Restricted access to prevent anti-social behaviour
  • Creation of safe play areas for children
  • Improved community spirit and a sense of shared ownership of the alleys

Eligibility

A pilot alleygating scheme was introduced in Barnsley in 2005. The Council is currently evaluating the outcome of this pilot scheme in order to determine the future development of alleygating in Barnsley.
