The Highway Structures section of the Highways and Engineering Department, are responsible for the inspection, assessment, maintenance and strengthening of all the existing highway structures in the Borough, as well as designing new structures.
The highway structures include, bridges, culverts, subways, underpasses, and retaining walls.
There are a number of bridges belonging to other organisations, such as Network Rail (operational railway lines), Rail Property (disused railway lines) and the Highways Agency (motorways and trunk roads) M1, A616(T), A61(T) and A628(T).
The footbridges (and culverts) for Public Rights of Way (PROW) are owned and maintained by the Countryside Section, in the Planning Department.
Anyone can ask for information or report a problem about a structure.
These could be due to an accident, structure vandalism (or theft), or a collapse or failure of the structure.
The highway structures are inspected every 2 years. The General Inspection is a visual inspection carried out in accordance with national guidelines.
The Council's Structures Section will respond to public reports of any accident damage, vandalism or theft, or safety issues relating to the bridges or walls.

Report damage to structures such as bridges
Highways Act 1980.
The Council will respond as soon as possible to any report and inspect the site to determine the severity of the problem.
Matters affecting public safety will be dealt with quickly, other non urgent matters will take longer.
Longer term maintenance problems will be prioritised and rectified where possible, subject to funding.

The money allocated to the maintenance of structures is very limited, and cannot meet all the needs.
Bridges with headroom less than 5.03m (16'6") are signed as low bridges.
