The Council as Highway Authority are responsible for the maintenance of all roads in its area, with the exception of some private roads and all motorways and trunk roads, which are the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
The Council's approach to winter maintenance is to follow a national Code of Practice in keeping major and strategic routes clear of ice by carrying out precautionary gritting and snow clearing of these routes when necessary. These major and strategic routes are known as primary routes.
The Council supplements this approach by providing grit bins at strategic locations on non-primary routes to allow self-help by motorists and pedestrians who encounter difficulties in adverse weather conditions.
In times of extreme measures a contingency plan is brought into action whereby non-Highways and Engineering personnel assist the Service with snow clearing duties.
All vehicular and pedestrian road users.
The decision to carry out precautionary gritting is an automatic one taken by the duty Winter Maintenance Co-ordinator and needs no input by others. If difficulties are being experienced, a request for service can be made to Highways and Engineering.
This can include a request for gritting of non-primary routes, the provision of additional grit bins or replenishing grit levels in existing grit bins.
Any concerns regarding the quality of service should also be referred to the Highways and Engineering Service

Can I have a grit bin on our street?
We have a long list of such requests for this service. Your request will be added onto our database and will be considered for next winter in accordance with our standard prioritisation procedures.
Why have you not gritted my street?
If your street is not on the list of primary routes it will not be gritted as a matter of routine.
Will you grit my street?
We currently precautionary grit 48% of Barnsley's roads, but unfortunately do not have resources to grit them all. If you are suffering particular problems we will enter your street on our list of such requests. This list will be passed to Engineering Services who carry out the gritting work and they will attend if and when resources are available.
Can you fill my grit bin?
Telephone the helpline with details of the grit bin location and the bin will be filled as soon as possible.
Will you relocate the grit bin away from my house?
Bins are positioned in the location considered safest and that will best benefit the community at large. We try to treat such requests sympathetically, but should further complaints be received following relocation the bin will be removed completely.
