In order to be able to place skips on the highway in Barnsley you must apply to be on our list of approved skip companies.
Please see the Code of Practice for the placing of skips on the Highway, which must be adhered to at all times.
If you wish to be included on our list of approved skip companies and agree to abide by the code of practice, please complete the skip application form, and return, along with a copy of your company’s public liability insurance certificate to the value of 5 million pounds.
Please be aware that from 01/02/08 Barnsley MBC commenced charging for the issuing of permits to place skips on the highway within the Barnsley MBC area.
All skips placed on the highway must comply with the Code of Practice issued under the Highways Act 1980, which includes the following issues:
Skip companies wishing to put a skip on the highway.
In order to receive a permit for a skip, you must be on our list of approved skip companies. Once you are on the list of approved companies, you should send a notification to the Highways Department before 12pm the day before the skip is to be placed on site if notified by e-mail to skips@barnsley.gov.uk. If notifying by any other method, 3 working days notice must be given. You should give details of the size of skip, location and proposed dates for the skip to be on site.
The Highway Authority will consider each application and may grant a licence subject to any conditions that may be applied.

The charges are as follows:
5 tonne skip or less = £5 per permit
Greater than 5 tonne skip = £10 per permit
Please give accurate information on the proposed location of the skip, together with the proposed duration that the skip will be placed on the highway.
If you have not previously placed skips on the highway in Barnsley, you must first register your details with us before a permit can be issued.
If you wish to report a problem about a skip it will help us if you could provide information such as the street name, locality and house number where the skip is located. The skip operators name should be visible on the side of the skip and this will help us contact them more quickly.

We aim to provide a permit within 1 working day of the application unless special conditions apply.
If you contact us with a problem about a skip we aim to investigate it and contact the company responsible within 3 working days. If the skip is causing a potential danger to road users we aim to respond within 24 hours.
