Bus shelters are provided by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. They are provided where a bus stop for boarding passengers has been established and some shelter from the elements is desirable. A set of criteria is used to establish those sites that qualify.
A request for a shelter needs to be sent to the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive. This should identify the bus stop and outline the need for a shelter.
Some shelters carry advertisement panels and these are provided under a contractual arrangement between the shelter manufacturer and the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and require planning consent.
Anyone can request a bus shelter.
When a request to provide a shelter (other than an advertisement one) is received by the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive they will test it against the criteria they have established. The criteria takes into account such factors as exposure to weather, passenger usage, bus frequency, environment, and so on.
If they consider a shelter is justified they will contact the Council with the details.
At this point the Council will consider the proposal and visit the site with a representative of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and the Police.
If the Council's requirements are met in respect of not creating a road safety hazard and maintaining an adequate footway width for pedestrian movement then the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive will be authorised to erect an approved type of shelter.
The construction of the shelter and its subsequence maintenance is the responsibility of the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive.
