Child pedestrian training that has been running successfully in 30 Barnsley schools since September 2002. The scheme is aimed at Year 1 children, those aged five and six years old. Over 1,000 children have already benefited from this training.
The scheme runs for up to a maximum of 14 consecutive weeks and uses a practical roadside method to improve young children's road safety skills and raise their awareness of traffic.
Parent volunteers and/or classroom assistants act as trainers for the scheme, working with very small groups of children in a 1 trainer to 2 children ratio. The trainers help the children to develop their observational skills and decision-making processes so that they can make positive decisions regarding:.
