Cycle tracks and lanes are provided where cyclists need a facility to make it obvious to other road users that they should keep part of the highway clear for cycling. Cycling is a sustainable means of travel and a healthy activity that is being encouraged by Central Government.
EligibilityThere are no hard and fast rules about providing a cycle lane or cycle track. The decision will depend on the circumstances such as number of cyclists using the routes and conflict with other traffic, accident information and cyclists own views on what is needed. Cyclists are permitted to use the bus lanes in Barnsley.
ProcedureWhere a cycle lane is requested the Council will consider whether this would benefit cyclists. It will consider the feasibility of providing a lane adjacent to the kerb line or whether this will disrupt other traffic flows and generate parking problems or pose a hazard to pedestrians. A Barnsley Bike User Group exists and this will be a source of consultation on cycling strategy, the requirements of cyclists in general, and on specific schemes.

Opening Times/Locations
When suggesting the need for a cycle lane or track please identify the route, such as, the origin and destination of cycle trips, as this will help all options to be investigated. It is useful to know whether it is a leisure trip involving families or it is a commuter or school journey that interests you. If you can supply numbers of cyclists that either make that trip or you definitely know would want to make that journey this will help in the assessment.
