Road Markings and Signage - Yellow Lines

Description

Yellow lines are used to indicate areas where vehicles are not permitted to wait. The most common are yellow lines laid parallel to the kerb which indicate that vehicles must not park at certain times. Double yellow lines indicate no waiting at any time whereas a single yellow line indicates waiting is only prohibited during certain times as shown on a sign plate. They are provided where either road safety or congestion issues arise because of parking.

Other yellow lines are used to designate :-

Bus bays where a bus needs to pull into the kerb at a bus stop

Schools where the area outside of the school gates needs to be kept clear of cars for visibility reasons

Junctions where vehicles stationary in a queue of traffic would block an exit for other traffic

A section of road where loading is also restricted

Eligibility

Anyone can suggest that yellow lines are needed because of a road safety or congestion problem on the highway, or to request existing lines to be renewed.

Procedure

The Council will give due consideration to whether yellow lines are needed, then legal procedures have to be followed to decide which type of line it proposes. A consultation process has to be followed, then the proposals will be advertised and any objections considered.
