Cycle training involves basic control, safety checks and maintenance of the cycle which can be carried out in a safe environment off road.
There is also training in road sense, which involves teaching cyclists how to deal with real situations they will encounter when out on the road in traffic.
The Council can only provide limited training and this is usually arranged through schools.
It is not appropriate to teach very young children (under 10 years of age) as they will be unable to fully understand the road sense lessons. Very young children under 10 years, therefore, should not be allowed to cycle on the road, unless they are always under very close and strict supervision, even if they have learned the necessary skills to control the bicycle.
Delivery of cycle training relies on volunteers who are willing to complete and pass an assessment themselves.
At this time the Council does not operate any formal on road training or proficiency testing.
It is aware that many children get bikes and like to cycle. It wants to encourage this, as it is a healthy activity and fits in with its policies particularly on school travel.
It will therefore pursue ways in which it can provide cycle training.

When contacting the Council explain clearly what your concerns are and who else you have spoken to.
Cycle training is normally for children. If you are an adult and need cycle training there are cycle groups and local clubs around that may be better placed to help.
