A school travel plan sets out to provide measures that will reduce the number of car trips made by staff, parents and children and will improve the safety on the journey to school.
The primary objectives of a School Travel Plan are:
Every school in the Authority is eligible to write a school travel plan. The Authority has officers who will provide help and assistance with the development of the plan.
Schools that submit a travel plan (that has reached the required criteria) will be eligible for a bursary award, which is typically between £5,000 to £10,000.
Secondary and Primary schools should in the first instance contact the school travel plan advisors who will assist in the process. Schools will be advised on the best way forward. It is the school who will write the travel plan.
It is essential for the school to survey the pupils, parents and staff to ascertain current transport choices. This baseline data will form the basis of the plan. From this information initiatives, including road safety education and training, walking buses, cycling schemes can all be developed.
The school can also develop lessons with curriculum links regarding sustainability and the affect car use has on the environment.
The plan should take a broad approach to travel looking in the first instance at what the school can achieve itself. The plan needs to set clear aims and objectives with timescales and who is responsible for each initiative.
The approved plan also needs to be monitored at regular intervals by both the school and the authority.

A school travel plan requires thought and discussion and consultations with all interested parties. It is not a quick process so it will take some time to be produced. Within the plan there may be quick 'wins' such as setting up a walking 'bus', but other objectives will only be achieved over a longer period of time.
The travel plan will identify how long achieving these objectives is expected to take. This will be reviewed periodically.
