Crossing points are provided for pedestrians where they have difficulty finding sufficient gaps in traffic to get safely across the road.
They normally take the form of zebra, pelican or puffin crossings which are formal crossings which have rules and regulations that road users need to obey. Other informal crossings can be provided such as a refuge island in the centre of a wide road.
A feature of recognised crossing points are kerbs dropped opposite one another to facilitate wheelchair users to easily get on and off the footway. These dropped sections of footway will have tactile paving at formal crossing points and may have them at the informal crossing points.
If you experience difficulty getting across a road and would like the Council to consider providing a pedestrian facilty you can bring this to the Council's attention.
When you have made a request for a pedestrian crossing facility the Council will carry out an initial site assesment. If a need and suitable location is identified then a pedestrian and vehicle survey will be carried out. This will produce a pedestrian/ vehicle conflict rating, which will be used to assess the justification for a crossing facility. Other factors such as the numbers of elderly, young children, mobility impairments etc. will also be taken into consideration.
The Personal Injury Collision record of the site will also be checked to see if road safety issues are evident and need to be considered. If the site meets the criteria further investigations will be conducted to check that it is feasible to provide a crossing and what type of crossing is best.
When the surveys have shown that a crossing is needed and can be provided a draft design will be produced and costs estimated. The presence of any outstanding crossing provisions in the programme and the availability of funding will determine when the crossing can be provided.

The investigation process can take at least 12 weeks. If a crossing is justified this will be added to the programme. Funding will need to be in place as well before the scheme can proceed.
