Speed checks are most frequently carried out when a speed limit is either being set or revised, or there is an allegation of widespread excessive speed by motorists. They are also carried out to monitor the effectiveness of some traffic schemes where speed reduction was one of the targets.
Speed checks can be requested but will normally only be carried out when there is evidence that excessive speed is widespread and the current speed limit appears inappropriate and needs reviewing. Often this will be in consultation with the police.
Where it is brought to the attention of the Council that a speed limit seems inappropriate consultations will take place with South Yorkshire Police. If the police also have concerns then speed checks will be arranged.
These will normally be carried out by road side equipment that do not require an operator in attendance. The results will either show that the speed profiles are typical for the speed limit and type of road or that an unusual proportion of motorists are travelling at an inappropriate speed. In the latter case the police will again be consulted and recommendations made on either revising the speed limit (if enforcement action of the current limit is needed) or to consider what measures are needed for better compliance by motorists.

Not applicable, however there is a variable adminstration charge to provide a copy of a Speed Check.
These will be shown on the invoice.
When contacting the Council please ensure you give realistic estimates of the speed at which you think vehicles are travelling and why you think this is inappropriate. Please give your own contact details so we can clarify any points with you.
