The authority operates twenty cemeteries thoughout the Borough; the majority of the cemeteries were inherited as part of the 1974 Local Government reorganisation. There are approximately 650 burials carried out each year. Arrangements for a burial can be made either directly or through a Funeral Director. You can also pre-buy a grave in most of our 20 cemeteries.

This service is available to everyone.
Procedure
Your Funeral Director or staff at Bereavement Services will be able to offer you advice and guidance on any grave details you need or if you wish to search for a grave or purchase a grave.

Opening Times/Locations
Bereavement Services, based at Barnsley Crematorium, Doncaster Road, Ardsley, Barnsley opening times are:
8:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Thursday
8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Fridays

How the customer can help
If you wish to search for a grave you can call in the office with details of the deceased and date of death and try and find the grave yourself. The crematorium staff can search on your behalf if you cannot get into the office.

Response Times/Next Steps
If enough information is given at the time of enquiry, the grave search can be carried out straight away. If you do not have much information, especially the date of death the search could take longer, but we will respond within 5 working days.

Additional Notes
A room is available at the Crematorium Office for grave searches.
A computer is available in this room with all burial records and grave records for Thurnscoe, Great Houghton and Bolton Cemetery.
Other records are held in registers kept at the Crematorium Office.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q If I find the grave will someone show me where it is in the cemetery?
A Yes, staff will meet you in the cemetery and show you the exact grave location, but we do have maps available at the Crematorium Office with grave locations on and you may be able to find the grave yourself.
Q If I want to look in the grave records myself, do I need an appointment?
A No you do not need an appointment. But the service is only available during office hours.
Q If I do not understand the registers will there be someone to help and advise me?
A Please ring the bell to the office and one of the technical clerks can advise you where necessary.
