Frequently Asked Questions

When can I put a headstone on my grave?
Cemetery regulations state that 6 months, must pass after burial to allow the ground to settle.  If a concrete raft is installed the headstones can be erected at anytime.

Can I have a kerb set around my grave?
This is only allowed on certain sections in certain cemeteries. Please contact Bereavement Services Staff to see if this is allowed. Tel 01226 206053.

Are Burials more expensive than Cremations?
If a new grave has to be purchased, then yes they are, if it is only a reopening of an existing grave then it can usually be a little bit more expensive.

How do I find out who owns an existing grave?

The Crematorium has all information on grave ownership. Please contact them on 01226 206053 for information on grave ownership within the Borough.

Can I bury in an existing grave without moving a headstone?

Due to the Health and Safety implications all graves that are to be dug, have to have their headstones removed.

How do I organise a new headstone?

A stonemason will help you with the purchasing of a headstone.
