DOG FOULING AND STRAYING
- Dog fouling accounts for approximately four tonnes of waste which is deposited in Barnsley every day.
- Dog fouling is offensive, particularly if it gets on children's hands and shoes.
- It contains a host of bacteria and parasites, which can cause illness and disease in people.
- Toxocara canis, found in dog faeces, can cause blindness in children.
- Stray dogs can cause nuisance, traffic accidents, and fouling problems.
LITTER
- Barnsley spent £94,000 last year removing litter from the Borough's paths, parks and streets.
- Litter is unsightly and makes the whole area look neglected.
- It attracts rats and other vermin.
- Litter kills and injures wildlife and pets.
FLY TIPPING & ABANDONED VEHICLES
- Garden rubbish, domestic refuse and commercial waste, etc. tipped illegally in lay-bys; the countryside; or on someone else's land, is fly tipping.
- We anticipate over 1,400 vehicles will be abandoned in the Borough this year.
- Removal costs the Council over £200,000 last year. This is likely to double in the next few years.
- These things can harm the environment and people, attract rats or other vermin, and be dangerous.
- They make an area feel unsafe and may stop businesses bringing jobs to Barnsley.
DRUG ABUSE LITTER
- Syringes may contain blood-borne viruses which can cause serious illness or death.
- They are a danger to adults and children, who may not know what they are, and who may inadvertently become pricked by them.
