Pollution Control

Description

The Pollution Control Team of Regulatory Services deals with a wide range of pollution related issues on and in land, air and water. The team has a wide range of skills and talents to respond to concerns regardless of whether the source is domestic or commercial. The team also works closely with other enforcement bodies involved in similar work such as the Environment Agency.

The duties of the team fall into the following categories:

• Investigation of complaints regarding air pollution and odours from domestic or commercial premises
• Investigation of complaints regarding noise pollution from domestic or commercial premises
• Authorisation of certain industrial processes as defined in the Environmental Protection Act, 1990
• Assess and manage air quality in the Borough to ensure compliance with the requirements of local air quality management. To view the latest information of the quality of the air we breathe in Barnsley, along with other air quality information, click BMBC Air Quality. 
• Protect residents from the threat of migrating mine gas and landfill gas from known sources
• Identification and Remediation of Contaminated Land under Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, and through the assessment of contamination issues as part of consultation on planning applications. • To provide information on environmental matters as requested by statute, members of the public, commercial organisations and other Council departments.
• To sample Private Water Supplies within the Borough under the Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009
