The Household Waste Collection service provides a kerbside collection of household refuse from domestic properties.
During 2005, Barnsley Council introduced a pilot scheme for segregated weekly collection from approximately 28,000 properties with garden waste and thin cardboard collected one week, supported by kerbside glass, cans and paper for recycling, and the grey residual bin the following week with rubbish sent to landfill.
Around a third of the borough is currently on this service with more planned. If you would like to know if you are included please contact us.
All properties should have a wheeled bin or refuse sacks for household waste disposal.
You can help by ensuring that your bin/sack is placed on the kerbside, without causing an obstruction, preferably the night before or by 6.30am on the day of collection ready for our crews to collect from 7.00am
Collection takes place on a four day week from Tuesday to Friday.

Is there anything I can't put in my bin?
Bins containing clinical waste (needles, dressings etc), soil or rubble, tyres, electrical items or large items (bikes, chairs etc), will not be emptied. Only normal household waste should be put in the wheelie bin. For advice on disposal of other items, please contact the Waste Management helpline.
Is my bin emptied on bank holidays?
Bins are emptied on a Tuesday to Friday schedule and so are not affected by any Bank Holiday except Christmas when each household is sent a sticker or leaflet detailing collections over the holiday period and these are also advertised in the local press.
What do I do if my bin gets lost or damaged?
Ring the Waste Management helpline for a replacement bin.
What do I do if my bin is not collected?
Ring the Waste Management helpline as there may be a delay on the collection round. If your bin has been missed and was placed out for collection as required and does not contain any unacceptable items, then it will be emptied as soon as possible after it is reported.
Can I paint my house number on my bin?
Yes. The bin is allocated to your property for its life and this may be useful in getting back the correct bin where a number of bins are put together for emptying.
What do I do if my bin is not big enough for my family?
If you have a large family, you may apply to have an additional bin. Requests for additional bins will only be granted where you can show that you are making full use of all waste collection services (including recycling) and still cannot fit all your household waste in one bin.
What do I do if I can't fit all my rubbish in my bin?
Any rubbish which will not fit in the bin with the lid closed must be either taken to a household waste recycling centre or retained until the next collection. No side rubbish whatsoever will be collected and bins with bags piled inside so that the lid will not close may not be emptied.
Do I have to wheel my bin out for collection?
All bins must be wheeled onto the kerbside for collection, bins will not be collected from within your property boundary.
Can I get any help to wheel my bin out?
If you are unable to wheel your bin out due to age or infirmity then you may apply for assistance by contacting the Waste Management helpline.
