Household Waste - Garden Waste

Summary

Garden Waste and Cardboard Collections

During 2005, Barnsley Council introduced a garden waste and cardboard collection for approximately 28,000 properties taking part in the pilot segregated weekly collection. The Collection scheme proved such a sucsess that in subsiquent years more and more properties have been added. Once the final 25,000 properties have been added in 2008 the whole of Barnsley will be the new style segregated weekly collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why have I got a green bin when I have no garden?
Unfortunately it has not been possible to visit every property before distributing the green bins and so some properties with no gardens will have received one. You can still use the bin for cardboard and waste from tubs and planters or you may wish to share one bin with neighbours. If you really feel that you do not want a green bin then telephone the waste management helpline and we will arrange for its removal. Please note that your grey residual bin will still only be collected on alternate weeks

When will my bin be collected?
Your bin will be collected every fortnight on the day indicated on your sticker. If you are unsure of which week your bin should be put out telephone the waste management helpline.

What should I do if my green bin is not collected?
If your bin is not collected please let us know by telephoning the waste management helpline.

I have had a contamination sticker put on my bin, what do I do now?
The contamination sticker indicates that the collectors have identified something in the bin that is not on the permissible list. You must identify and remove the item(s) and put the bin out for collection on your next collection day when it will be collected as normal.

How thick branches can I put in my bin?
As the material in the bins is shredded before composting, we can only accept branches with a diameter of 3cm (approx 1") or less.

Why can't I put vegetable peelings in my green bin?
Following the foot and mouth outbreak the rules for composting have been tightened up by the government and any waste that comes through a kitchen has to go through a process called in-vessel composting where all material is guaranteed to reach a temperature that kills any potential pathogens and bacteria. At present there is no facility locally for in-vessel composting and so materials collected are being composted in open windrows which prevents the inclusion of kitchen waste.

Why can't I put my waste in plastic sacks in the bin to keep it clean?
The bins are emptied directly into a special refuse vehicle and so any plastic sacks will be tipped into the mixture and will contaminate the final compost.

Can I get any help wheeling my bin out?
If you have a current dispensation then this will also apply to your green bin.

Can I buy back the compost?
Unfortunately not at the present time.
