Counselling is a process whereby a person is helped to deal with any problems they may have. This usually involves talking to someone who has specialist training, sometimes in a particular area of work or knowledge, and who will work professionally to help to resolve issues in the way that is most suitable for the individual.
Counselling is available to any individual, including a child or young person, couple or family, who is willing to engage with the counsellor who will work with them to help them solve problems or difficulties.
Most agencies or organisations that offer a counselling service will operate an appointments system. Appointments usually last for about one hour and can happen over several weeks or months. The counsellor will not give advice or tell anyone what they should do; they will encourage the person receiving counselling to talk through their feelings and difficulties, to find solutions for themselves. This will help them to manage their problems and to deal with their feelings.
Although there is no charge for information or counselling services provided by Barnsley Council, some organisations may charge for their services.
