Sometimes families have problems. More often than not, parents can resolve their own problems, but in some cases, they need support from professionals, for example social workers, to help them sort things out.
Maybe your mum and dad are splitting up and they're finding it hard to look after you properly. If they're unable to agree who you should live with or they're unable to keep you safe, they might have to go to a family court.
This is where judges and magistrates make decisions about children and young people. They will make their decisions after listening carefully to what you and your parents say. They may also ask a social worker or children's guardian to work with you and your family to assist the judge in making the best decision for you. Remember that a family court is about family matters. It is not a criminal court, which is where people go who have done something wrong. In the family court everyone involved has a duty to work in the best interests of the child/young person.
