An initial assessment is carried out, when Social Services have been asked by you or by someone else on your behalf for help with a problem you are having. Although the Social Services Department will lead the assessment, other people who know you will be involved. Before we can help we need to know more about you and your family. This will involve collecting information from you, your child and from other people involved with your family e.g a health Visitor,Teacher etc. Most importantly we will then talk to you about what you see has the problem and look at what help we might be able to offer or we may be able to advise you about about another agency who can provide you with the assistance you need.

Upon receipt of the referral if the Team Manager believes that this is a case that warrants further involvement by Social Services as a child in need (including those in need of protection) then a Social Worker will be asked to complete an Initial Assessment. The assessment will cover the views/wishes of the child, their carers and other agencies involved with them. Unless there is child protection concerns other agencies will only be contacted with the permission of the parent/carer. The assessment will identify any need for further involvement by professionals.
