If a young person commits an offence, but has not been to court before, the police may consider giving them a final warning. If the young person admits the offence and agrees to co-operate with the final warning requirements, then they will not have to appear at court.
When the young person is arrested, the police will check their records to see if they have previously been arrested or have had a previous reprimand, final warning or conviction at court.
If they are eligible and admit the offence, the police will notify theYouth Offending Team (YOT) within one working day.
Within five days of notification, the YOT's police officers will meet with the young person and their parents, conduct an assessment and put in place a programme that is designed to help the young person avoid future offending.
More information, including a detailed leaflet, is available at Barnsley YOT, McLintock's building, Barnsley S70 6BX. Opening hours are between 9.00am and 5.00pm from Monday to Friday, buy the YOT police officers may undertake assessments and some parts of offending behaviour programmes outside normal hours.
