Parenting Orders were introduced under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 and can be made on any parent/carer, including step parents, of a child who is brought to court for an offence.
If they think it is necessary the Court will ask the Youth Offending Team to conduct a parenting support assessment, which will be carried out by the YOT's Parenting Worker. The assessment will help the Parenting Worker identify what programme or guidance sessions will best help and support the parent and young person
One a Parenting Order is in place, it means parents and carers must attend either a parenting skills programme or weekly counselling or guidance sessions for up to three months. The court can add conditions lasting for up to 12 months, for example, ensuring that their child attends school, or is at home during specified hours.
