Barnsley Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT)

Drug & Alcohol Action Teams (DAAT) are the partnerships responsible for the delivering the National Drug Strategy and National Alcohol Strategy at a local level.

What do DAATs do?

The DAATs ensure that the work of local agencies is brought together effectively and that cross-agency projects are co-ordinated successfully. DAATs take strategic decisions on expenditure and service delivery within the aims of the National Strategies and their main themes:-

  • Protecting Communities
  • Preventing harm to children, young people and families
  • Delivering new approaches to drug treatment and social re-integration
  • Public information campaigns and communication

Their work involves:

  • Commissioning services, including supporting structures
  • Monitoring and reporting on performance
  • Communicating plans, activities and performance to stakeholders

They are supported by the Home Office team at Regional Government level at Yorkshire & Humber and the National Treatment Agency.

They work closely with local agencies and voluntary groups who provide information, treatment and other support to people and their families who use drugs and alcohol.

Treatment planning logo.jpgTreatment Planning

There is an annual cycle in place across England where a range of local partnerships complete adult drug treatment plans and young people’s specialist substance misuse treatment plans.

These plans outline how the partnerships aim to commission and manage treatment services for young people in the community and adults in the community and in prisons using central and local sources of funding. These plans then form the basis for joint performance of treatment systems by the National Treatment Agency with the local partnerships to monitor progress against drug strategy priorities at local, regional and national level.

Barnsley beacon.jpgUnderstanding the needs of coping with a loved one’s drug or alcohol misuse.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The DAAT support local carer services.  We use the term ‘carer’ to describe an individual who is coping with or is affected by a loved one’s drug or alcohol misuse.  We understand that not all individuals will see themselves as ‘carers’ but as a family member or friend who cares about a loved one who misuses substances.

There are almost a million children living with an alcohol-dependent parent(s) in the UK today, many of them hiding their problems, living in fear and without support. For confidential information, advice and support go to National Association for Children of Alcoholics
