Direct Payments

Description

It is now possible to get money known as 'Direct Payments' to pay for the social care services you need, instead of receiving services arranged by a Care Manager. The main difference between a direct payment and the usual type of help is that you receive a cash payment. This gives you more choice regarding the sort of care you can receive and who will be providing it.

Am I eligible for a Direct Payment?

To be eligible for a direct payment you must have been assessed as needing community care services, be willing and able to manage the payment (with help if needed) and be able to consent to receiving a direct payment.
Individuals who might be eligible are Older People, adults with a physical, sensory or learning disability, a person with HIV or AIDS, parents or carers of children with a disability.
Some people with mental health problems and some carers may also be eligible for a direct payment.

How do I get a Direct Payment?

If you are interested in receiving direct payments you must firstly have an assessment of your care needs, or if you have already been assessed, you must ask for a review of your care and inform the care manager that you would like direct payments. A care manager will visit you to assess your situation and produce a community care plan for you if you do not already have one. At this visit you can discuss the possibility of meeting your needs through direct payments. If it seems that direct payments are suitable you will be given as much information as you need, including details about specialist support services in Barnsley to assist people in managing their direct payments.

Will I have to pay any charges or fees?

Under section 17 of the Health and Social Services and Social Security Adjudication's Act 1983, local authorities are allowed to decide what charges, if any they make for services.

You will be asked to pay the same amount towards the cost of your care regardless of whether you use direct payments or not. Your care manager will provide you with up to date information about charging at your assessment.

There is no charge for assessing your needs or for advice and information.
