Description

A direct payment is a cash payment made direct to the service user to enable them to purchase their own social care support instead of receiving support arranged by a Care Manager or Social Worker. This enables people to have greater choice about the kind of support they wish to receive and who will be providing it.

If the service user is in receipt of an individual budget a direct payment is one of the ways that people may choose to manage the money.

Am I eligible for a Direct Payment?

To be eligible for a direct payment you must have been assessed as needing community care services and be willing and able to manage the payment (with help if needed).
Individuals who might be eligible are Older People, adults with a physical, sensory or learning disability, a person with HIV or AIDS, parents or carers of children with a disability, people with mental health problems and carers.

How do I get a Direct Payment?

If you are eligible they will arrange for the assessment process to be carried out. If you have already been assessed you should request a review of your care and inform the Care Manager that you are interested in a direct payment.

Will I have to pay any charges or fees?

Under section 17 of the Health and Social Services and Social Security Adjudication's Act 1983, local authorities are allowed to decide what charges, if any they make for services.

You will be asked to pay the same amount towards the cost of your care regardless of whether you use direct payments or not. Your care manager will provide you with up to date information about charging at your assessment.

There is no charge for assessing your needs or for advice and information.

Monday to Thursday - 9.00am until 5.00pm

Fridays - 9.00am until 4.30pm.
