Asylum Seeker's support

BMBC contributes to the UKs international commitments regarding those fleeing famine and civil war by managing 153 community properties and an induction centre on behalf of, and in contract with, the Home Office. Funding for this humanitarian work comes entirely and directly from Central Government and has no cost implications for the local council tax payer.

Asylum Seekers are not permitted to enter the local employment market despite often being highly educated and skilled. Instead they are given a subsistence allowance worth 70% of income support which they must collect weekly from the Post Office using an ID card issued to them by the Home Office. Their stay in Barnsley is managed and monitored by a dedicated BMBC team in partnership with other local agencies. Asylum seekers are loaned equipment and furniture required for basic living such as tables, chairs and cookers but are not loaned or given mobile phones, clothing, TVs or cars. Local voluntary, church and charitable groups pass on clothing and other items as and when they are donated from local people.
