The council can provide financial help for anyone with less than £22,250 of capital assets and who needs care in a residential/nursing home. Capital assets include savings,Investments and the value of any property.Everyone, who is helped in this way, even for a short period, will have to pay towards the cost of their care
Residential Assessments will calculate how much you will have to pay each week based on a national set of rules that apply to everyone in the country.
Your income and any capital assets of more than £13,500 in value will be taken into account. If you have more than £22,500 of capital assets you will be expected to pay the full costs yourself. If you own your own home this may be taken into account when calculating the value of your capital assets. You may need to sell your home to pay for the cost of your care.
The Council can provide you with financial help while you are waiting to sell your property.
However, they will reclaim this money once the property is sold. It may be more appropriate for some people in these circumstances to receive continuing financial support from the Benefits Agency (formerly the Department of Social Security). Your care manager/social worker will be able to provide further information about the options available to you.
If you wish to move into a home that charges more than Social Services would normally expect to pay, you will have to find someone else, e.g. a relative, a friend or charity to pay an additional amount for as long as you are in the home. Social Services will only agree to this if they are satisfied that these arrangements can be sustained.
