The following services for disabled people are available in Barnsley:
The Community Equipment and Adaptations Team based at Wellington House provide an assessment service for people needing equipment, minor adaptations or major adaptations in order to maintain their independence in their own homes. Equipment stored at the Community Equipment Store can also be accessed by district nurses and occupational therapists working in other teams within the Primary Care Trust.
This Service is commissioned from an independent provider, the Disabilities Trust. It consists of a combination of day centre and outreach services offering a range of activities and support similar to that provided at Laithes Lane, again supporting between 20-30 service users each week. There is purpose built accommodation for seven service users on the same site as the day centre, providing an opportunity for them to move towards independent living.
The Team provides a range of social work services to services users with a physical disability or sensory impairment management, the commissioning of personal assistance services and residential placements and the provision of certain specialised equipment to meet care plans. The rehabilitation officers for visually impaired people provide long cane training, mobility skills, and safety within the household.. The social work support includes assessment and care. In addition officers for deaf and hearing impaired people provide sign language support, advice and assistive listening devices.
Are provided by a mixture of local authority and independent provision. The services aim to provide enabling assistance to give the service user the chance to control their own lives, develop their self help skills and participate effectively in the community.
The Community Rehabilitation and Respite Unit (CRRU) is a 16 bedded unit based on the Keresforth site, comprises fourteen single rooms and one double room. Eight beds are designated rehabilitation, and eight are utilised to provide respite care. The unit is supported by a multidisciplinary team including medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy, social work and psychology services. The team is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive rehabilitation packages in partnership with service users, and providing nursing support for people during their period of respite.
In addition to inpatient services the unit offers individual rehabilitation out patient appointments, and individual and group therapy appointments. The small therapy outreach team offers support in the community.
