The following services for disabled people are available in Barnsley:
The Community Equipment and Adaptations Team based at Wellington House provide an assessment service for people needing equipment, minor adaptations or major adaptations in order to maintain their independence in their own homes. Equipment stored at the Community Equipment Store can also be accessed by district nurses and occupational therapists working in other teams within the Primary Care Trust.
This Service is commissioned from an independent provider, the Disabilities Trust, a range of activities and support supporting between 20-30 service users each week, providing an opportunity for them to move towards independent living.
The Team provides a range of social work services to services users with a physical disability, care management, the commissioning of personal assistance services and residential placements. The social work support includes assessment, care reviews and safeguarding.
Are provided by a mixture of local authority and independent provision. The services aim to provide enabling assistance to give the service user the chance to control their own lives, develop their self help skills and participate effectively in the community.
The Community Rehabilitation and Respite Unit (CRRU) is a 16 bedded unit based on the Keresforth site, comprises fourteen single rooms and one double room. The unit is supported by a multidisciplinary team including medical, nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy, social work and psychology services. The team is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive rehabilitation packages in partnership with service users, and providing nursing support for people during their period of respite.
In addition to inpatient services the unit offers individual rehabilitation out patient appointments, and individual and group therapy appointments. The small therapy outreach team offers support in the community.
