Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council’s (BMBC) Housing Market Renewal (HMR) Team is funded from central government as part of a 10 to 15 year programme to improve housing quality in the Barnsley Dearne area. It is envisaged that the HMR initiative will fundamentally change the housing market and attract people back into the areas that have become unpopular.
The HMR programme is aiming to deliver improvements to people’s homes and bring positive change to all aspects of life in the Dearne. The main aim of the HMR programme is to improve the quality and choice of housing within the Barnsley Dearne Housing Market.

Transform South Yorkshire (TSY) is the name of South Yorkshires Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder and is one of 9 organisations set up by the Department for Communities and Local Government. TSY covers large parts of Sheffield and Rotherham and small but significant parts of Doncaster and Barnsley.
TSY awarded £11.34 million to spend in the Barnsley Dearne for the period 2006 – 2008 to be invested on housing in the Dearne Valley. This investment means that the programme is well established in Thurnscoe, Bolton upon Dearne and Goldthorpe. Further investment of around £15 million pounds between 2008-2011 will mean that the programme will make real improvements to the Dearne area.
