Preferred plans for re-development of Central Goldthorpe presented to public.

On the 13th 14th and 20th August 2008 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council (BMBC) presented their preferred plans for the re-development of central Goldthorpe to the public at the Girl Guide Hut on Lockwood Road. The preferred plans for the regeneration of the estate built on the views of local people who attended previous consultation events in September 2007. The plans proposed radical changes to the centre of Goldthorpe including the provision of a purpose built new Junior and Infant School and a new Market Square.

The exhibitions proved to be extremely popular, with around 400 people attending over the three days and around half of these completed a questionnaire, detailing their views on different aspects of the proposals. One to one consultations are now taking place with residents who could be directly affected by the plans if they go ahead. Once the views of these residents are obtained, all the results will be passed to BMBC’s Cabinet who will make a decision on if the plans will be approved, modified, or disregarded.

Goldthorpe funding.

The announcement of around £15 million pounds of investment for the Dearne between 2008-2011 means that plans and projects for improvements in central Goldthorpe will gather pace. Research exercises and consultation events have identified central Goldthorpe as a priority area for intervention.

Work in Goldthorpe has so far centred on property improvements to complement the Decent Homes Scheme. Resident consultation highlighted the need for environmental improvements to uplift the area. In total 446 properties have benefited from works which include off road parking and front boundary walls. The work also included replacing street lights, drop curbs and improvements to road surfaces. Works were undertaken to council properties and properties that have been purchased through the Right to Buy scheme.

Returned surveys have indicated a high level of satisfaction with works undertaken. The new investment for 2008-2011 will ensure that work in Goldthorpe will gather pace.

Enforcement Project
A project has been set up to deal with private properties that are severely affecting the general appearance of the neighbourhood, through poor condition of properties and overgrown and untidy gardens. The council has power under planning legislation to take action against property and land owners where it is felt that the property or land is in such a poor condition that it is affecting the appearance of an area.

The council work with property owners to ensure that the properties appearance is improved.  If the work is not carried out within the agreed timescale then the council has the power to either fine the owner or carry out the work and recharge the owner.
If you would like to report a property that is in a state of disrepair please contact the Impact Officer on 01226 7753387 or 01226 774925.
