The strategic aim of the pathfinder is to “build and support sustainable communities and successful neighbourhoods where the quality and choice of housing underpins a buoyant economy and an improved quality of life”.
Middlecliffe and Little Houghton are adjoining small villages totalling less than 500 people that served the former Houghton main colliery. They have a post office, newsagent, well used golf club and a recreation ground but they do not have any schools or health care facilities and suffer from poor public transport. Housing is mixed including Berneslai Homes, owner occupied and privately rented properties in varying conditions.
The vision for the village of Middlecliffe is to ensure consolidation of the village environments. This will sustain Middlecliffe as a ‘high quality village location’ offering good access to open countryside and the benefits of living within a strong community in close proximity to compact and thriving urban settlements.
Enforcement Project
A project has been set up to deal with private properties that are severely affecting the general appearance of the neighbourhood, through poor condition of properties and overgrown and untidy gardens.
The council has power under planning legislation to take action against property and land owners where it is felt that the property or land is in such a poor condition that it is affecting the appearance of an area.
The council work with property owners to ensure that the properties appearance is improved. If the work is not carried out within the agreed timescale then the council has the power to either fine the owner or carry out the work and recharge the owner.
If you would like to report a property that is in a state of disrepair please contact the Impact Officer on 01226 7753387 or 01226 774925.
