Housing Needs, Markets and Affordability Study 2005 - Overview:
The aims of the study were to assess the future housing needs of Barnsley, identify housing markets, understand their drivers and provide evidence to support market interventions in Worsbrough, the Green Corridor (in the north-east of the Borough) and the Dearne Housing Market Renewal (HMR) area. In addition the study sought to provide thorough and robust evidence to act as a foundation for the policies and proposals for housing in the Council's Local Development Framework; linked to this has been the production of the Council's first ever affordable housing policy (which was approved in January 2007).

Private Sector Housing Stock Condition Survey 2005 Overview:
This survey resulted in the production of 3 related reports. It presents the findings of a comprehensive sample survey of private sector housing conditions in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley.
The house condition survey has involved a Borough-wide sample of 1000 dwellings; implemented in two phases from mid-2004 to early 2005. Phase 1 included the Housing Market Renewal Fund Pathfinder Area centred on the wards of Dearne South and Dearne Thurnscoe with Phase 2 extending the survey programme Borough-wide. Phase 3 (completed in early 2006) looked in detail at the following localities within the Borough, namely Carlton, Royston, Worsborough, and on the immediate periphery of Barnsley itself the communities centred on Old Mill Lane, Doncaster Road and Dodworth Road.
The survey reports provide a benchmark of current housing conditions within the Borough and an indication of condition change since the previous house condition survey completed in 1999. To date the reports have been used to inform spending decisions on interventions to address fuel poverty amongst vulnerable households and to remedy poor housing conditions. Looking ahead, the reports will also help us to reach decisions about where to spend money and on what for the period 2008-2011.
