Housing Associations in Barnsley

Housing Associations work in partnership with the Council to meet housing need in Barnsley. Housing Associations have approximately 1800 properties in Barnsley. The Housing Corporation funds the work of Housing Associations from central government funding.  In order to access this funding Housing Associations have to meet needs that form part of the priorities identified in the Council's Housing Strategy. 

The Housing Corporation funds the activities of Housing Associations through a fund called the Approved Development Programme, this provides the public funding to build and renovate homes.  Housing Associations will provide an additional 177 units of social housing in Barnsley between 2006-2008. The Housing Corporation take a strategic approach to investment, working closely with the Council to meet local housing need of today and into the future. The Approved Development Programme is being invested in Barnsley in support of a number of regeneration initiatives, including Kendray, Grimethorpe, Housing Market Renewal and others.  Housing Associations will also develop housing for vulnerable people including older people, people with a learning disability, homeless people and care leavers.

Housing Associations are eligible to apply for a Housing Corporation Grant, if the projects are supported by the Council.  Private sector developers may now also apply for a Housing Corporation grant.
