Housing Associations in Barnsley

Housing Associations work in partnership with the Council to meet housing need in Barnsley. Housing Associations have approximately 1800 properties in Barnsley. The Homes and Communities Agency fund the work of Housing Associations from central government funding.  In order to access this funding Housing Associations have to meet the housing need that form part of the priorities identified in the Regional Housing Strategy and other Barnsley Council strategies. 

The Homes and Communities Agency fund the activities of Housing Associations through a fund called the Approved Development Programme, this provides the public funding to build and renovate homes.  Housing Associations will provide an additional 630 units of social housing in Barnsley between 2008 - 2011. The Homes and Communities Agency take a strategic approach to investment, working closely with the Council to meet local housing need of today and into the future. The Approved Development Programme is being invested in Barnsley in support of a number of regeneration initiatives, including Kendray, Grimethorpe, Worsbrough, Royston Green Corridor, Housing Market Renewal and others.  Housing Associations will also develop housing for vulnerable people including older people, people with a learning disability, homeless people and care leavers.

Housing Associations are eligible to apply for a Housing Corporation Grant, if the projects are supported by the Council.  Private sector developers may now also apply for a Homes and Communities Agency grant.
