The Council’s Strategic Housing Team is responsible for the overall housing strategy and investment plans for all our partner housing organisations developing schemes in the borough. The majority of schemes are jointly funded by the Homes and Community Agency and partner Housing Associations.

Extracare schemes are designed for older people to live independently, they have extra facilities such as a restaurant, laundry, hairdressers there is also care and management staff based on site. There are a number of qualifying entry criteria for this type of accommodation and all allocations are made through Berneslai Homes Housing Register. This scheme opened in May 2008 with 42 rented apartments and 8 shared ownership apartments, all with 2 bedrooms. Another 7 bungalows to link to the scheme are for rent, these should be complete in spring 2010. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
This scheme will be on the former Saltersbrook sheltered housing site at Highgate in the Dearne. Funding is in place for 60 x 2 bed apartments to rent with completion set for late 2010. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
This scheme will be on Victoria / King Street Hoyland. Funding is in place to build 48 x 1 and 2 bedroomed apartments. 4 x 2 bedroomed apartments will be for shared ownership, the remainder will be for rent. Completion for this developement is due early 2011. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
Funding is in place for 8 x 4 bedroomed bungalows. These will be built specifically for families where one or more family members have a physical disability. They will be built on sites in Jump, Birdwell and Brierley. Applicants are assessed by Social Services so that families with the highest need are allocated properties. Completion expected late 2009.
This scheme is for 38 properties, 32 units for rent and 6 for low cost Homebuy / Shared ownership. The scheme comprises of, 2 to 3 bedroom houses and 2 bedroomed bungalows including 1 full mobility bungalow. Completion is due in December 2009. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
Funding is in place to replace the current sheltered housing scheme. The new scheme will consist of 15 properties. 8 x 2 bedroomed flats and 6 x 2 bedroomed bungalows for rent with completion expected in February 2010. All properties will be let through the Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
Building is expected to commence shortly on a scheme of 9 bungalows for rent. This will include 2 full mobility bungalows to replace the core sheltered housing complex. Completion is due in the summer of 2010. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
Building has now started on 19 bungalows for rent. Completion is due in June 2010. All properties will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
This scheme is for 12 units. 6 x 3 bedroomed houses and 6 x 2 bedroomed flats, 5 for rent and 7 for shared ownership. Completion is due November 2009. BMBC are working with Yorkshire Housing Association to acquire properties on Garden Street. This work is part of the wider Sheffield Road regeneration initiative.
Equity Housing Group has renovated 8 terraced properties for shared ownership in Barnsley town centre, Wombwell and Royston. Please contact Strategic Housing 01226 772634/772702 for information on the three remaining properties at Royston and Wombwell.
Two new schemes will be starting soon: 34 affordable dwellings for local people at Royd Avenue, Millhouse Green and 4 affordable dwellings at School Street, Gawber. All properties to rent will be let through Berneslai Homes Housing Register.
