Supported Housing

 What is Supported Housing?

Supported housing covers housing projects that are provided for the benefit of people who need additional support to manage and keep their home.  This can mean: 

  • Regular support in a specifically designed project (accommodation-based support).
  • Projects supplying 24-hour support to help clients live in the wider community (live-in support).
  • Support visits for someone who can almost live completely independently in their home (floating support).
  • Sheltered housing schemes for older people.

    What support is provided?

    Housing-related support aims to:

    • Develop or sustain an individuals skills to live independently and safely in their own home.
    • Provide support to prevent homelessness or tenancy breakdown or admission to institutional care.
    • Is based on an agreement between the service provider and the user with agreed objectives.
    • Each individual has a support plan tailored to their particular needs and could include any of the following:
      • Setting up a tenancy - understanding their rights and responsibilities.
      • Money matters - help to claim benefits and manage budgets to make sure rent and bills are paid.
      • General housekeeping - support with everyday things, such as shopping, cleaning, preparing food, doing laundry etc.
      • Social support - to find out about social and leisure activities in the community and how to get involved.
      • Practical support - for example to access and manage medication, local transport and jobs. Obtaining and maintaining furnishings.
      • Emotional and physical issues - someone on hand to talk to and help resolve problems.
      • Accessing additional support services - contacting Health/Social Services or BADAS.
      • Any other issues connected with the maintenance of their tenancies.
      • Support must be related to the maintenance of the tenancy and does not include personal care.

     

    What type of clients are supported?

    Supported accommodation is provided for a wide range of client groups including the following:

    • Older vulnerable people
    • Young vulnerable people
    • People with an offending history
    • People with a physical or learning disability
    • People with mental health problems
    • Teenage parents
    • People who have misused drugs or alcohol
    • People fleeing domestic violence
    • Single homeless people
    • Vulnerable families
    • Refugees

     

    What services are available in Barnsley?

    Sheltered housing for the older people.  There are fully sheltered schemes and individual bungalows managed by both Berneslai Homes on behalf of Barnsley Council and Housing Associations in Barnsley. Information via Barnsley Connect Offices or tel 01226 775656.

    Barnsley also has Extracare sheltered housing offering different levels of care and housing support for people who need support to live independently. Extracare schemes normally provide additional communal facilities such as a restaurant, laundry and a variety of optional activities.

    Lavender Court in Kendray, tel 01226 245037, is owned and managed by Chevin Housing Association . The scheme provides 44 one and two bedroomed apartments in the core building plus 8 two bedroomed bungalows all for rent.

    Westmeads in Royston is due to open May 2008, and will be owned and managed by South Yorkshire Housing Association. The scheme will provide 50 two bedroomed apartments, 42 for rent and 8 for Homebuy shared ownership. Barnsley Council will have nomination rights for the rented apartments tel 01226 775555.     Judith House (8 flats in core + 8 dispersed properties move-on) Client group - domestic violence. Managed by English Churches Housing Group. Referrals via Homelessness Housing Advice Office. Tel 01226 773870 Social Services and other Local Authorities.

    Millhouse, Hoyle Mill (8 young people) Client group - care leavers or young vulnerable persons under 20 years. Managed by Stonham Housing Association. Tel 01226 213230 Referrals via Social Services, Probation and NCH Backup - 01226770902.

    Worsbrough and Darfield (15 properties). Client group - homeless families. Managed by English Churches Housing Group. Referrals via Homelessness and Housing Advice. Tel 01226 773870.

    Jubilee Gardens, Royston (16 units + 6 satellites). Client Group - mental health. Managed by South Yorkshire Housing Association. Referrals via BMBC Mental Health - Primary Care Trust and Social Services and Community Mental Health Teams. Tel 01226 248610 / 752839 / 390370 / 341374.

    Spring Grove, Carlton (Seven properties). Client group - Physical Disability. Managed by Yorkshire Housing Association. Referrals via Social Services Disability Team, Keresforth Centre, Barnsley, tel 01226 282025 .

    The Forge,(7 core unit + 10 move-on flats) Client group - young single homeless 16 - 25 years. Managed by South Yorkshire Housing Association. Referrals via Homelessness & Housing Advice Office. Tel 01226 773870.

    Carr Gomm, Dodworth (10 units) Shared accommodation for Learning Disabilities client group. Referral through Learning Disability Team. Tel 01226 772516.

    Who pays for the support?

    Short term (2 years and under) services are exempt (the support provider is paid directly by Supporting People funding programme)Tenancy related support is paid for through BMBC Supporting People funding programme, or the individual if they do not qualify for supporting people payments. If the tenant is eligible, rent for accommodation is still paid for through housing benefit.


    Charges to tenants

    Long-term - charges made to tenants but those on low incomes, may receive full or part subsidy.
