Barnsley's Private Rented Accreditation Scheme

The Accreditation Scheme is a partnership set up between Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and the Barnsley Residential Landlords Association (BRLA). Landlords will be accredited as well as individual properties so long as they and their properties meet the required standards. The aim of the scheme is to improve and promote housing conditions within the private rented sector, to recognise and encourage landlords who provide quality accommodation and to improve the way these properties are managed.

The scheme is open to landlords. Existing tenants and prospective tenants can check if their properties have been accredited by contacting the Private Sector Housing Team.

To be an accredited landlord they must first become a member of the Barnsley Residential Landlords Association and agree to abide by the Associations Code of Practice. Once a landlord is a member of the Barnsley Residential Landlords Association they can apply for any number of their properties to be accredited. A completed application form should be returned to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and the officer will arrange to visit the property. An accreditation certificate will be issued when the officer is satisfied that the property meets the necessary standards as indicated in the Accreditation Code of Practice booklet. Barnsley Metropolitan  Borough Council will also carry out random spot check inspections.

To join the Barnsley Residential Landlords Association a fee of £50.00 per annum is chargeable plus an initial joining fee of £50.00.  The Accreditation Code of Practice booklet is only available to members.
