Barnsley Archives and Local Studies exists to preserve and make available historic records and printed material relating to Barnsley Metropolitan Borough. We aim to provide a customer focussed service, working hard to make more records available and increase the resources we offer.
The department holds a wealth of records and information. Original documents, along with copies of items held elsewhere such as parish registers, title deeds, wills, photographs, maps and newspapers are all available for public access.
We hope that this site will answer most questions about the resources available and the work of the department. If you have any further questions or comments about the service, please do not hesitate to email us at archives@barnsley.gov.uk.
Latest news (April 2009): Barnsley Archives and Local Studies are delighted to announce a successful award from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a new museum in Barnsley Town Hall, incorporating a state of the art Archives and Local Studies Research Centre. Under the tag-line of 'Experience Barnsley', this new heritage centre will be an exciting and inspiring addition to the borough.
From June 8th, we will be asking our customers to take part in the Public Services Quality Group's Survey of Archive Usage. We thank you for taking the time to complete this survey which enables us to improve the services we offer to you.
